This is a rebuilt engine from a well known rebuilder. The report from the inspector hired by the rebuilder suggested the cause of failure was. "Engine overheating by the customer which warped the head allowing the head gasket to fail and fill the cylinder with sea water". This is a lot of nonsense. The above pictures reveal the true cause of the failure. The valve stem was tight in the valve guide when the engine was rebuilt. The valve stem friction overheated the valve stem causing galling. The galling prevented the valve from fully closing and was struck by the piston. ALL of the valves in this head are tight and have signs of overheating from friction. The valves in the opposite head show no signs of overheating. The head gasket did not fail. |
